The Rata Nursery
| We are working closely with Project Crimson to promote the Golden Bay rata trails and to encourage the re planting of rata trees in the Tasman Bay region. | |
To that end we purchase in young root trainer stock that has been propagated from locally sourced seed. We then pot the young seedlings into larger bags and nurture them on thru to the next stage of growth. This is achieved in purpose built nursery beds through which the grey water outflows from the café are pumped …… all an integral part of the eco philosophy of our overall venture. As Northern rata (metrosideros robusta) is the predominant tree in the nearby forest we specialize in that particular species but we also grow on and supply the Southern rata (metrosideros umbellata) and a variety of other sub species. Our “Rata Restoration” display and sales alcove has sparked a great deal of response from people all over the country interested in helping to restore the rata forests ……… or simply wanting to grow a rata tree in their own home garden. |

| Thousands of potted trees are sold annually and our speciality gift is a potted rata tree presented in a possum leather surround we call “Rata’s Revenge”. | |
